Office App Tips: Hyperlinks, Status Bar, PDF Privacy & Markdown Export

Productivity tips for Word, Excel, LibreOffice, and OnlyOffice

Applies to: Microsoft Word on the Web | Microsoft Excel | LibreOffice 26.2 | OnlyOffice 9.3.0

In this article, you’ll learn how to use recently added features across popular office apps to work faster and more securely.

Prerequisites

  • A Microsoft account to access Word on the Web
  • Microsoft Excel (recent version)
  • LibreOffice 26.2 or later
  • OnlyOffice 9.3.0 or later

Word on the Web now lets you create hyperlinks by pasting a URL directly onto selected text — no dialog box required.

Steps

  1. Copy the URL you want to use (Ctrl+C).
  2. In your document, select the text you want to turn into a hyperlink.
  3. Press Ctrl+V to paste the URL onto the selected text.

The text changes to turquoise, indicating it’s now a hyperlink. To verify the destination URL, hover your cursor over the link.

Note: The existing methods still work. You can press Ctrl+K or go to Insert > Link to add hyperlinks manually.

Display minimum and maximum values in the Excel status bar

You can configure Excel’s status bar to show the minimum and maximum values of a selected cell range at a glance.

Steps

  1. Right-click the status bar at the bottom of the Excel window.
  2. Select Minimum and Maximum from the context menu.
  3. Select a range of cells in your spreadsheet.

The minimum and maximum values appear in the status bar below your data.

Tip: In recent versions of Excel, clicking a value in the status bar copies it to your clipboard automatically.

Remove local file paths when exporting PDFs in LibreOffice

When a LibreOffice document contains links to local files, those file paths are embedded in the exported PDF. Recipients can see paths like C:\Users\Name\Private\Drafts even if they can’t access the files themselves. LibreOffice 26.2 adds an option to remove these links on export.

Steps

  1. Open your document in LibreOffice.
  2. Go to File > Export As > Export as PDF.
  3. In the PDF Options dialog, select Links on the left panel.
  4. Select the Remove cross-document links checkbox.
  5. Click Export.Note: This option removes links to files on your local machine only. Standard web URLs and internal links within the same PDF are not affected.

Save a document in Markdown format using OnlyOffice

OnlyOffice 9.3.0 supports saving documents as Markdown (.md) files. This is useful when you need plain-text output for documentation, blogs, or version-controlled repositories.

Steps

  1. Open your document in OnlyOffice.
  2. Go to File > Save As, or press Ctrl+S.
  3. In the Save as type dropdown, select Markdown File (*.md).
  4. Click Save.Important: Markdown export is best suited for text-based documents such as notes, articles, and web content. Documents with complex layouts, embedded images, or heavily formatted styles may not convert accurately.
