Microsoft Edge on Windows 11 Now Syncs Passkeys Across Devices

Microsoft Edge Now Syncs Passkeys Across Windows Devices

Microsoft has officially rolled out cloud-synced passkeys in Microsoft Edge for Windows 11 (and Windows 10), making password-free sign-ins more practical than ever. This update allows users to store and access passkeys securely across multiple devices using their Microsoft Account, so you can log in faster and stay safer.

🔐 What Are Passkeys?

Passkeys are the next step beyond passwords. They’re cryptographic keys that replace traditional passwords for online sign-ins. Instead of typing a password, you authenticate using a fingerprint, face scan, or Windows Hello PIN.

Each passkey is unique to a specific app or website and can’t be phished, reused, or stolen in a data breach — making them far more secure than passwords.

☁️ Passkey Sync via Microsoft Account

The new update lets you save passkeys in your Microsoft Account, which automatically syncs them between devices signed in with the same account.

Key features:

  • Cloud storage: Your passkeys are encrypted and backed up in Microsoft’s secure cloud.
  • Cross-device access: Use the same passkey on all your Windows 10 and 11 PCs.
  • Recovery protection: Even if your device is lost or reset, your passkeys remain safe and recoverable.
  • Password Manager integration: You can view and manage all your saved passkeys directly inside Edge’s Password Manager.

🔑 How Security Works

  • Passkeys are protected by a Microsoft Password Manager PIN or Windows Hello biometric authentication.
  • When setting up a new device, you’ll need to verify your identity — you have up to 10 attempts to enter your unlock PIN.
  • Passkeys are fully encrypted both in transit and at rest, ensuring only you can decrypt and use them.

For users who prefer privacy over convenience, there’s still the option to store passkeys locally instead of syncing them to the cloud.

⚙️ How to Manage Passkeys in Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to Settings → Profiles → Passwords → Passkeys.
  3. Here you can:
    • View saved passkeys.
    • Delete or revoke unused ones.
    • Toggle Sync passkeys across devices on or off.

This interface also allows you to see which sites or apps currently support passkeys — a growing list that includes Google, GitHub, eBay, and many others.

🌐 Platform Availability

  • Currently supported: Windows 10 and Windows 11 (Microsoft Edge v130 and newer).
  • Coming soon: Support for macOS and mobile platforms (iOS and Android) is planned.
  • Edge on these platforms will use the same Microsoft Account to sync your passkeys securely across ecosystems.

🧩 Why It Matters

With this update, Microsoft is closing the gap between Windows and competitors like Apple’s iCloud Keychain and Google Password Manager. By combining passkeys, biometrics, and cloud sync, Microsoft makes passwordless sign-ins not only more secure but also more convenient for millions of Windows users.

This move also supports Microsoft’s passwordless future initiative — where your face, fingerprint, or PIN replaces your password entirely.
